New Repression for NGOs

The House of Representatives has passed the bill on foundations into law. Are the laws merely a means for the government to control social activity?

Foundations should no longer be instruments for money laundering and abuse of power. Last Wednesday, the House of Representatives passed into law strict prohibitions regulating foundations, for the first time since the Indonesian republic was formed. Under the new law, foundations are restricted to activity within social sectors. The new laws guard against the widespread practice of manipulating foundations to function as covers for sham business
