Six death row inmates must now make their final appeals after their applications for pardon were rejected by President Megawati.

WHEN Sumiarsih received notice that her request for pardon had been rejected by the president, she fell into deep silence. Sumiarsih took leave from her prison warden, Hasnah, at the Malang Prison, and returned to her cell to read the Bible. Moments later, she burst into tears. "Her eyes glazed over. Once in a while she would look to the skies," said one prison officer.
