IN the far northeast corner of Jakarta, where once there were bird-rich wetlands along the coast, stands the prosperous, predominantly Chinese suburb of Kelapa Gading (The Ivory Coconut). We might seriously question the developers’ wisdom in building on such low-lying land as it floods badly when the rains are in full spate. But, then, we might question so-called ‘developers’ full stop.
