THE question was posed by Pramoedya Ananta Toer to Sindhunata. They met in Prams hot living quarters on Buru Island one dark night in 1978.

It seems so, Sindhu answered as he passed on Gudang Garam cigarettes and an amount of money from Prams wife, Maemunah Thamrin. Sindhu recollected Prams sad eyes. He seemed possessive and worried that his wife would be disloyal. He was a person who was easily hurt.

The
