Sawerigadings Crown in Leiden

Hundreds of fragments of Sureq Galigo in manuscript form are kept in Leiden, Holland. This legacy is more complete than any other versions, as the manuscript owned by Buginese noblewoman Colliq Pujie, has been damaged in many parts.

The smell of old books permeates the atmosphere as we enter the room. Hundreds of ancient manuscripts lie in neat rows, occupying about 160 shelves on the second floor of the library at the Oriental Department, Leiden University, Holland. Not everybody is permitted to enter this room, as the manuscripts are very old. Many of them are invaluable and if mishandled, might easily be destroyed.
