Few Islamic encyclopedias published in English, French, German or even Arabic for international readers carry adequate entries on Islam and the Muslims in Indonesia. This is true of encyclopedias written not only by Islamists, formerly known as Orientalists, in the West, but also by Muslim scholars themselves. Da'irah al-Ma`arif, an Arabic-language encyclopedia published in the Middle East, carries insubstantial entries on Islam in Indonesia
