THE Indonesian government has a big dream. Armed with massive nickel reserves, it wants to turn Indonesia into a center of electric car battery production to supply the global demand. This is, of course, a noble goal. However, that does not mean it is a realistic one.

With just nickel reserves to offer, Indonesia’s bargaining position is nothing special. Nickel is indeed one of the essential elements in making car batteries, but
