Helping out with Operation Lotus

Doctor Frits Kakiailatu led the medical response to paralyzed victims of Operasi Seroja, or Operation Lotus, in East Timor. He also pioneered kidney transplant operations at the Gatot Soebroto Army Hospital.

A middle-aged woman entered Frits August Kakiailatu's examination room at the Dr. Mintohardjo Navy Hospital in Jakarta. While looking over the patient's medical file, Frits explained its contents to her. "If it were me, I would get an operation," he said. The 77-year-old urologist still routinely operates on patients. The operations are scheduled for Tuesdays and Thursdays. "There are not many. One in a day is enough," Frits said.
