Something was different about writer and translator Ali Audah's new home at the Bogor Baru Housing Complex in Bogor, West Java. The white walls were clearly visible. "You couldn't see the walls in my old place because they were covered by books," Ali told Tempo on a recent Monday in August. Ali lives here with his wife, Maryam Audah, 78, whom he married in 1952. "We have only been here for two months," he said.
Though he just turned 90, Ali can still walk without a cane. Three times a week, on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, he strolls around the complex for 40 minutes to stay fit. He has a simple secret for staying healthy: lots of fruits and vegetables. "The WHO (World Health Organization) recommends eating 180 grams of fruits and vegetables (per day). For me it's 350 grams," he said. As a result, he can walk just about anywhere, as long as there are no stairs, although his pace is a bit slow.
