Sukarno is a real paradox. His personal history has always been interpreted from two opposing poles. A fighter who fought against the colonials but was considered as having apologized to the Dutch. Someone who was enamored of uniting the nationalists, communists and religion but fell at the communists’ feet. Someone who longed for democracy but killed it when he dissolved parliament and declared his ‘Guided Democracy’ in 1959.
