The unprecedented trial began August 31 at the Ministry of Agriculture auditorium in South Jakarta—the first of its kind in the history of independent Indonesia.
On trial for corruption was former president Suharto, yet for all the gravity of the occasion, the trial itself took on a theatrical air. The venue was spacious enough to accommodate hundreds of people, the seats neatly arranged and the decor reminiscent of a theater set.
