East Timor – Uncertainty for Post-Evacuees

The fate of former East Timorese military and police officers and civil servants migrating to East Nusa Tenggara is burdened by the slow process of bureaucracy.

Last Monday, assembled in the yard of the 161st Wirasakti Military Command Headquarters in Kupang, approximately 50 soldiers stood upright for a flag raising ceremony. They are newcomers, formerly under the command of the 164th Wiraharma Military Command in Dili. When East Timor declared independence in August 1999, they chose to join Indonesia.

However, three weeks ago, they staged a demonstration in the Military Command Headquarters yard.
