Despite claims that Indonesia's first direct presidential election would only be a popularity contest, voters in Palembang emphasized the need for change.

As the votes are called out one by one, a light rain starts to attack the mounting afternoon heat in Palembang, South Sumatra. The gentleman announcing the vote count at this polling station pauses and offers some simple words of wisdom to the small crowd. "There is no loser today, the winner is the Indonesian people," he says smiling.
