A number of government agencies have projects targeting pesantren. Unhappy schoolmasters suspect this to be a new form of surveillance.

SUDARSONO Hardjosukarto, Director-General for National Unity and Political Affairs at the Home Affairs Department has lately become a very busy man. He had to travel to a number of pesantren (Islamic boarding schools), stretching from Java to Madura. He was on a mission to sell the nationalism concept to a community which has traditionally focused more on religious studies.
