The Row Over Dutch Corvettes

Admiral Slamet Soebijanto tried to cancel the purchase of two corvettes from Holland. A controversial move, done without the approval of the Indonesian Defense Minister.

THE letter was dated January 20, 2006. The sender was Robert Post, the marketing manager for Schelde Naval Shipbuilding, a company owned by the Dutch government. The letter was addressed to Slamet Soebijanto, Indonesian Navy Chief of Staff. In it, Robert Post firmly rejected the cancellation of purchase for the two corvettes ordered by Slamet. A copy of the letter was also sent to the Minister of Defense of the Republic of Indonesia.
