In exchange for an extradition agreement, Singapore gained space for its military exercises for 25 years. But an embargo is still on the cards.

THERE was some interesting haggling going on at the Singapore Foreign Affairs Ministry in Tanglin on Monday night last week. An Indonesian negotiator proposed a retroactive period of 20 years as part of an extradition treaty between Indonesia and Singapore. But his Singaporean counterpart refused because it is unusual for a treaty to be retrospective.
“Nineteen...” the Indonesia negotiator countered.
“No, 10 years!”
“Alright, 15.”
