THE awnings of shops at the Handbag and Suitcase Industry Cooperative in Tanggulangin, Sidoarjo, East Java, fail to prevent the sun’s rays from stinging an old man’s skin. He keeps a close watch over the stickers he offers for sale, which were lined up on a wooden table, on Wednesday afternoon last week. Whenever a vehicle approached, he would nimbly blow on a whistle, instantly becoming a parking attendant.
