As 2000 draws to a close, a whole series of scandals remain unsolved. Despite ‘democracy’, political compromise remains the watchword in Indonesia’s corridors of power. The law is just there to be raped.

If it is true, it will be welcome news for millions. As of last week, the rumor doing the rounds in the attorney general’s office was that former president Suharto may yet get his come-uppance before he goes to meet his maker. The on-off corruption case against him could be back in court in January.
