An alarming 80 percent of cities in Java are at risk from natural disasters. Areas along the northern coast are most vulnerable.

THE Association of Indonesian Planners (IAPI) calls for an immediate review of the spatial layouts of 80 percent of cities in Java with potential disasters as the chief va­ria­ble. “The Island of Java is under threat from land, sea and air,” said the head of IAPI’s Study and Planning department, Yayat Supriatna, at the Public Works Department in Jakarta last Wednesday.
