THE sun was still low at 6:30am. Some people were still preparing to open their stalls and shops at Cibingbin market, Kuningan, West Java, on Saturday a fortnight ago.

Iwan Herdiansyah, 27, was just opening Zahra Family, his Internet shop which also provides computer typing services, when four armed men suddenly dashed in. “They wore plainclothes. Some were carrying long-barreled guns,” said Tisna, 42, a vendor who runs a stall near Iwan’s
