Instead of investigating irregular bank transactions by senior officers, the National Police are pursuing how the information “leaked.” An “independent team” led by Mathius Salempang was recruited to look into the matter.

THE routine coordinating meeting held early each week suddenly felt tense. All senior officers were asked to attend. Tensions had been on the boil at the National Police HQ on Jl. Trunojoyo in South Jakarta since Monday morning last week. It was not a terrorist attack or deteriorating security situation that senior police officials were discussing, but an information “leak” related to high-ranking officers’ bank accounts.
