Rallying Against ‘The Defamer’

Rioting broke out in Temanggung after a court verdict against the accused in a case of defamation of religion. The rioters came from out of town.

THE group suddenly arrived near the office of a people’s credit bank in Temanggung, Central Java. They blended in with the crowd, which was angry after the court gave a five-year prison sentence to Antonius Richmond Bawengan, found guilty in a religious defamation case. “Come on, let’s go west,” said one person in the group. “Our target is not the court, but the church.”
