A Sustainable Marine Economy

Indonesia has the largest marine biodiversity in the world. But bureaucracy, infrastructure, and pollution make it difficult to develop its marine tourism to its full potential.

Indonesia is blessed with more than 95,000 kilometers of coast line and more than 17,000 islands. With the world’s largest marine biodiversity with an estimated economic value of US$1 trillion, the archipelago is an ideal destination for marine tourism. And yet, according to the tourism ministry’s 2014 data, of the nine million tourists who visited Indonesia, only one million or around 11 percent visited marine tourism sites.
