Rioting erupted in several towns in Papua. It was triggered by racial slurs against Papuan students in Malang and Surabaya.

BEFORE Mikael Jeksen Siafu and his group could even begin their demonstration in front the Regional Legislative Council (DPRD) of the City of Malang in East Java, a group of people from a community organization moved in and began pelting them with stones. Jeksen and tens of his friends, members of the Indonesian People’s Front for West Papua, scattered immediately. As they retreated, they occasionally attempted to retaliate.
