Poso on the Edge
At least 14 people have been killed in the latest round of fighting in Sulawesi's Poso regency. And there is no hint of a solution.
July 10, 2001
Poso is at war and the war is getting fiercer. Hundreds of police and soldiers are on the streets. Their weapons are cocked, ready to fire. Four armored cars from the Makassar-based Wirabuana military command patrol slowly, their guns pointed upwards spookily. While the civilians find any way they can to make their own crude, home-made weapons. Crude but deadly. Schoolkids hold knives in their hands or other sharp objects, even firearms.
