Shadowy Shootings

Kopassus has been accused of involvement in the shooting of three Freeport employees in Timika in late August, an accusation the military top brass have denied.

Jhon Rumbiak, supervisor of the Jakarta Legal Aid Institute in Papua was adamant. "Kopassus was involved in the shooting of the Freeport employees last August," he insisted, referring to the controversial Army Special Forces unit. This statement, made last week, angered military headquarters. "This is slander and we will sue him," said the commander-in-chief, Army Gen. Endriartono Sutarto.
