Sand quarried in Riau is a lucrative export to land-hungry Singapore, but local fishermen say the industry is destroying their livelihood.

Bakri bin Ali is now dead and with him goes the dream of a better education for his wife and four children. His 14-year-old son Kasmadi can only lament his misfortune as his dreams of entering high school are shattered. Bakri's widow, Maria, is now the sole breadwinner. She fends for the family selling cakes from house to house in her island village. Her income is tiny—barely enough to support the family.
