TAKENGON, the capital of Central Aceh Regency, was deserted until last weekend. Public transport drivers parked their vehicles at the city terminal, unwilling to carry passengers to district areas and other regency towns. Consequently, the supply of basic needs came to a halt and prices rocketed. A liter of kerosene cost Rp3,500-Rp4,000 against only Rp1,900 previously. A coconut—earlier sold at Rp1,000—tripled in price to Rp3,000.
