A number of areas on Aceh's western coast have been devastated and are now difficult to reach. Thousands of refugees await relief aid.

USMAN can do nothing but thank God. This 34-year-old managed to save himself from the devastating earthquake and the tsunami that hit Aceh's western coast on December 26 last year. His wife and two small kids, both under 5, were also spared death in this disaster. Now Usman, a contractor by profession, stays in a relative's house in Banda Aceh. He managed to leave his village after making a very difficult journey.
