The suffering of Indonesian migrant workers seems endless, but the government will not stop their export.

THE sun was shining right above their heads when more than 10,000 people gathered in the office yard of the Department of Manpower & Transmigration on the first day of Ramadan, the Islamic fasting month. Hunger and thirst could not dampen the cheers of the young women who wore headscarves and black-and-white uniform dresses. "Long live the Indonesian migrant workers (TKI)," they shouted. Some carried posters reading: "We Need Work."
