ABU Mas'ud's home in Jogosuran village, Solo, Central Java, was surrounded by the press all night long. They were impatient to ask whether Taufik Rifki, accused of being a member of Jamaah Islamiyah (JI) in the Philippines, and who had just been captured, is really Abu's son.

But then an announcement put on a window in the house surprised the press. "No interviews. Press conference in three or four days," it said. This despite the fact that Tau
