R.P. Soejono paved the way for development of prehistoric studies in Indonesia. He refused to be manipulated by foreign researchers.

MONDAY last week, Prof Dr Raden Panji Soejono passed away. Indonesia lost one of her best sons. Born in Mojokerto, East Java, on November 27, 1926, he dedicated more than 50 years of his life to develop archeology in Indonesia. Although he had retired from his post as head of the National Archaeological Research Center since 1987, he remained faithful visiting and working at the institute which he built until the last days of his life.
