News about the demise of Joop Ave, Indonesia's 'Father of Tourism' on February 5 came as a shock to members of the tourism industry. Many could not believe it. Calls came in from all over Indonesia to seek confirmation on whether Joop had really passed away.

Joop Ave was born on December 5, 1934, in Yogyakarta. He graduated from the Foreign Services Academy (ADLN) in 1957, continuing his post graduate studies in political science at the University of the Philippines in Manila. He spoke fluent English, Dutch, German and French, and worked for six years with Radio Republik Indonesia as an announcer in English and French.
