Nyoman Gunarsa: Balinese Through and Through

Nyoman Gunarsa (1944-2017) cared about painting Balinese ornaments and dancers the very things that brought him success. He also established museums to preserve both modern and traditional Balinese paintings.

PATANGPULUHAN, Yogyakarta, mid-1967. Almost once a week, Nyoman Gunarsa would go to Fadjar Sidik's rented house late in the afternoon to discuss his final project as a student at the Indonesian Academy of Fine Arts (ASRI). Nyoman had chosen to create a number of paintings in the style of Affandi, a painter he admired both because of the latter's aesthetics as well as his achievements, which had allowed Affandi to build his own private museum.
