Selo Soemardjan closed tightly the lid of the political shame he was privy to, but eventually he played politics.

THE silver-haired old man was trapped in the crowd of undergraduates at the University of Indonesia (UI) campus in Salemba, Jakarta. The youths who could pass off as his grandchildren posed a question: "Pak, will you follow, or not?" The old man was under intense pressure, particularly since microphones and journalists were staring at him. The response eventually arrived. "If the students advance, I'll follow," he said. The students applauded.
