Electing Local Leaders

Elections of local leaders have begun, with good results so far. They must be continued and improved, despite the continuing risk of disturbances.

THE first direct local election in Indonesia took place on June 1, in the Kutai Kartanegara regency of West Kalimantan. People there voted for their regent and deputy regent. The security forces reported that the historic event proceeded calmly and orderly. There were shortcomings, to be sure, but they were within acceptable limits. So, if the Kutai election is any measure, we can worry less about possible chaotic elections in other regions.
