Legal Cover for Independents
The government should issue a regulation on independent candidates. It would taketoo long to wait for an amendment to the Regional Government Law.

THE government should act quickly after the Constitutional Court issued a ruling allowing independent candidates to run in regional elections. There are many reasons why. In 2008, there will be 14 elections for leadership of regencies, cities and provinces. The Constitutional Court ruling needs a “legal umbrella” in the form of a law so its verdict can be implemented.
