RETURNING to one’s hometown to celebrate Idul Fitri, the holiday at the end of the fasting month of Ramadan, is an inseparable part of Indonesian culture. This strengthening of ties with family and friends is believed to have significant spiritual value. It is not limited to forgiving each others’ mistakes and making displays of reverence to one’s parents and elders. This annual gathering of the extended family carries an important meaning.
