GENERAL Bambang Hendarso Danuri, the new National Chief of Police, should be thankful that he does not have to start his new job from scratch. Strong foundations were laid by his predecessor, General Sutanto, and because of it, the image of the police in the past three years has improved significantly.

Sutanto made some important improvements. Under his watch, the police tracked down terrorists, and even nabbed the main man, who was a fugitive.
