Cautious Pessimism

The Transjakarta bus service is poor and far below target. A comprehensive strategy is needed to overhaul it so it is effectively integrated with the Jakarta city plan.

AFTER five years of operation, the fate of the Transjakarta bus system is becoming increasingly bleak. Instead of reducing the congestion in the capital, it has had the opposite effect. Private vehicles and city buses today use the busway lanes, and in certain areas, officials even direct non-Transjakarta public transportation vehicles onto busway lanes.
