Don’t Stop at a Moratorium
The government announced it will stop issuing permits allowing forest lands to be converted for industrial use for up to two years. This needs the President’s firm backing.

FROM Norway, President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono waved the moratorium flag: a two-year halt on issuing licenses for the conversion of forests and peatland for industrial use. This decision should be commended if it really is applied from 2011 to 2013. Reportedly, the moratorium will save 1.98 million hectares of forest—an important step given the growing seriousness of global warming.
