Mount Merapi has claimed its highest number of victims since 1994. Clear implementation of safety standards laid down in the Disaster Management Law is urgently needed.

IF the evacuation had been conducted properly and efficiently, the number of victims caused by Mount Merapi’s eruptions last Tuesday could have been significantly reduced. Compared to the Mentawai earthquake and tsunami, which could not have been predicted, the Merapi disaster was explained long beforehand, predicted clearly and reported non-stop.
