A Questionable Sentence

The light sentence meted out to a Justice & Prosperity Party politician found guilty of fraud could inspire more banking crimes. A thorough review of his case must be carried out.

IT appears that courts do not always act according to one’s sense of justice. Take the case of Misbakhun, the House of Representatives (DPR) member accused of falsifying a US$22.5 million Bank Century letter of credit (LC). The prosecution demanded an eight-year sentence and a fine of Rp10 billion for Misbakhun, but strangely, the judges sentenced him only to one year in jail, and no fine.
