THE early warnings from the Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) cannot be dismissed lightly. This United Nations body has again warned of the threat of a food crisis this year. Production of wheat, rice, corn and other food crops is set to fall as a result of extreme climate changes.

It is easy to guess the consequences. World commodity prices may continue rising. Global food crop prices have so far risen by 35 percent. The FAO predicts tha
