IT is interesting to note that Indonesia seems to be of interest to foreign researchers mostly when it is under a repressive government. During the New Order, for example, studies on Indonesia were on top of the list at university campuses around the world.
The donors funding these research programs were inevitably opposed to authoritarian regimes.
