THE central management of the All-Indonesia Tennis Association (Pelti) deserves no praise for the way it has treated Tami Grende. After years of failing to produce world-class tennis players, Pelti declined an invitation from the International Tennis Federation (ITF) for the Indonesian tennis playerwho is half Balinese and half Italianto play on the international circuit, despite her victory in the women's junior doubles at Wimbledon.
If Pelti does not immediately change its mind, the 17-year-old will not appear at several international tournaments, including the US Open, one of the most prestigious competitions. As a result, she will lose points, and her world ranking will fall drastically. Tami, and Indonesia, will never be spoken of again in world tennis circles.
