Troubled Waters over the South China Sea

ASEAN by itself cannot be expected to resolve the South China Sea disputes. This is an opportunity for Indonesia to take a leadership role in the regional organization.

THE territorial disputes between a number of Southeast Asian nations and China over the South China Sea show just how ineffective ASEAN has become. Many member countries, such as Indonesia, Philippines, Malaysia, Vietnam and Brunei, have gone their own respective ways in dealing the situation, instead of responding collectively through the association they formed back almost 50 years ago.
