Eradicate or Reduce the becak `blight'?

The raids on becak (pedicabs) in Jakarta have finally turned tragic. Why do those involved not seek an alternative solution?

Jakarta—metropolitan area, center of government, modern city replete with skyscrapers. It is, of course, difficult to accept that such a city should still have pedicabs weaving in and out between the traffic. This is because road conditions are not supportive due to the absence of a properly ordered public transportation system.
