Labor Day, Why Not?

Demands that the state declare a national labor day deserve consideration. But it should not be May 1.

Thousands of workers took to the streets on May 1. They were not intent on rioting or instigating a general strike. Rather, they were demanding that a national holiday be declared to honor the nation's workers. Unfortunately, the government appeared not to know how to react to those demands. Thus, in Surabaya clashes broke out between workers and the police, which left a number of people injured.
