Wanted: Governor Elected by the People

Can the backing of the president and vice president make Jakartans accept Governor Sutiyoso for another five-year term?

DEMOCRACY is being tested in Jakarta: will the citizens of our capital city be able to elect a governor of their own choice? If Jakarta—the city with the largest number of educated people in Indonesia—fails this test, it will be an indication that democracy is still wanting in this country. And it is proving to be a difficult test, what with President Megawati herself declaring that Jakarta is not yet ready for a civilian governor.
